August 13, 2010, Newsletter Issue #57: The Advantages Of New Mother Support Groups

Tip of the Week

What often happens with a group of friends is that they all begin marrying around the same time, and then they all start having children around the same time. So, there’s a good chance that if you’re pregnant, a good friend probably is too. You could take advantage of this time to make fun of your friend’s rapid weight gain (because of course you still look like a million dollars), or you could be a little more mature than that and start a new mother support group.

There are a lot of advantages to new mother support groups including:

Sharing pregnancy stories, advice, and support Exchanging information and pregnancy resources for better health Make new friends Gives new moms a chance to connect with other adults Gives new mothers a chance to develop support systems Becoming a new mom is a lot like becoming initiated into a new club. The minute the baby is born, other mothers give you knowing glances, supportive nods, and sympathetic smiles. It’s like all of a sudden there’s a whole new world that you had no idea about. Having the support and friendship of other new moms is probably one of the most important things you can have right now. Otherwise, you end up spending quite a few hours of those first newborn months in seclusion, wondering if what you’re feeling is normal, and if what you’re doing is right.
