Why buy something for a newborn when you could buy something for the mother? After all, the newborn doesn’t even know he has fingernails and it’s not like he or she can send you a thank you card. So why bother? Not enough thought goes into what the mother needs. Poor new mom, up all night with a crying baby and spending her spare time soaking in a sitz bath. Good grief!
Of course, you don’t want it to look like you’ve forgotten all about that moving mass poking around under the expectant mom’s blouse. Buy a diaper bag so that the baby will have something useful to carry his or her stuff in, but instead of filling it with the usual baby gear, fill it with things that the mother can use. The diaper bag could include any of the following items:
- Energy bars. Pacing the floors all night with a crying baby really works up an appetite.
- Good quality slippers for the new mother.
- Scented candles and bubble bath. Who knows, she might actually find time someday to relax in the tub.
- A juicy, celebrity gossip magazine. It gets boring on those sitz baths.
- Chocolate. Appropriate for all occasions. No reason needed.
- A shoulder or lower back bag that can be heated in the microwave.
- Gift certificates (manicure, pedicure, a night out at a favorite restaurant, etc.)
- A nice set of luxury bed sheets (for the parents, not the baby!)
The point is, once the baby is born, it’s like the mother doesn’t exist anymore. She’s there to serve, nurse, and nurture, but it’s all about the baby. Why not give her a break and think about her for a change?
